[Video] Tuckahoe Recreation Club’s Pool Story: Better Air Quality, Less Chemicals

To further the Tuckahoe Recreation Club’s commitment to protecting patrons’ well-being and enjoyment, the facility’s management was looking for a way to eliminate “chlorine odor.” After searching for the right solution, they found a revolutionary water treatment technology that has improved their facility on many levels.

The Challenge: “Chlorine Odor” Caused by Chloramines

“We were trying to eliminate the odor in the air from chloramines,” said Mark Alsop, Head Pool Operator at Tuckahoe Recreation Club. “We were getting a lot of complaints that people’s skin and bathing suits, when they came out of the pool, smelled like chlorine.” Unpleasant “chlorine odor,” red eyes and irritated skin aren’t the result of chlorine, but rather chloramines in the pool or spa water. Also known as combined chlorine, chloramines are a disinfection byproduct (DBP) that forms when chlorine combines with contaminants, such as lotions, skin oils, sweat, dirt, etc., in the water. These chloramines release toxic gases that can increase the risk of swimmers and staff developing asthma, allergies and other respiratory problems after repeated exposure. Fortunately, modern technology has allowed aquatic facility operators to eliminate the negative effects of chloramines without overly expensive or complicated systems.

The Solution: AOP Pool and Spa Water Treatment

To reduce chloramines, the Tuckahoe Recreation Club management decided to install Clear Comfort’s Hydroxyl-Based Advanced Oxidation (AOP) water treatment system and monitor the results. Clear Comfort’s AOP disinfection technology is proven to reduce up to 90 percent of DBPs and other chloramines in aquatic facilities. This reduction in chloramines can completely transform swimming environments, allowing patrons to enjoy their pool or spa time without harsh smells or irritation.

The Results: Better Air Quality, Less Chemicals

Fresh Air Quality and Silky-Feeling Water

Within a short period of installing Clear Comfort’s AOP system, the Tuckahoe Recreation Club management received over 30 member emails that complemented the facility’s air and water quality improvements. “They tell us that the air is much easier to breathe,” said Alsop. “They tell us their skin feels different when they get out of the pool, some say that their skin almost feels silky.”

An Added Bonus: Lower Chemical Costs

In addition to improving patron satisfaction, Tuckahoe Recreation Club’s management said that Clear Comfort's AOP pool and spa treatment dramatically reduced its chemical consumption. Less chemical use not only means less chemical side effects - but also less chemical expenses.  “It’s been a great success for our members and from an operational standpoint, in terms of savings in chlorine,” said Rob Castorri, Tuckahoe Recreation Club’s General Manager.  The Tuckahoe Recreation Club installed Clear Comfort’s AOP pool system on its 148,000-gallon pool and kept track of its chlorine use. The pool began using 4 to 4 ½ gallons of chlorine per day and lowered to 1 and 1 ½ gallons per day – a savings of 75 percent.

AOP: The Future of Pool and Spa Water Treatment

Recreation centers, universities, professional sports teams, water parks, YMCAs and more across the country have improved operations and patron satisfaction with Clear Comfort’s AOP. The ability to reduce chemical consumption, improve air and water quality and destroy chlorine-resistant pathogens, like Cryptosporidium, makes Clear Comfort the top choice for aquatic operators looking for the best water treatment solution.  To learn more about how Clear Comfort’s AOP has helped other aquatic facilities reduce 85 to 90 percent of chloramines and other harmful DBPs, download our free case study.
