Science-Icon-copyIn Part II of our comparison of pool water treatment methods, we’ll cover UV, ozone and ionizers. Did you miss Part I? Read it here.

UV pool treatment

UV pool sanitizers use ultraviolet rays to treat water that passes by the system by disrupting the DNA of microbes, including bacteria, protozoa and other contaminants. Pros of UV pool treatment UV pool systems attack the DNA of microbes that are chlorine resistant, offering a reliable secondary level of sanitation. Cons of UV pool treatment UV systems can be high in cost, especially for commercial systems that are often more than $50,000. In addition, UV still requires normal chlorine levels for complete water treatment throughout the pool.

Ozone pool treatment

Ozone is an unstable molecule that is created when electrical energy breaks apart an oxygen molecule (O2) to create a chemical reaction that produces ozone (O3). Ozone systems produce ozone that oxidizes contaminants. Pros of ozone pool treatment Ozone is a strong oxidizer and can be up to 100 times stronger than chlorine. In addition, it oxidizes chlorine-resistant contaminants that can cause serious illness in humans. Cons of ozone Ozone is only effective as it mixes with water in the return lines, therefore, it requires normal levels of chlorine to provide complete sanitation. In addition, ozone gas can be very harmful at high levels.

Pool ionizers

Ionizers treat a pool by releasing the ions of copper or silver into the water. These ions destroy bacteria. Pros of copper and silver ionizers Ionizers often say they reduce your chlorine demand because they decrease the amount of contaminants in the pool. Cons of copper and silver ionizers While some ionizers may claim a pool can be chlorine free, ionizers do not provide oxidation. In addition, ionizers do not kill bacteria quickly enough to safely negate the use of normal levels of chlorine.

Are there other pool water treatment options?

Yes. Clear Comfort’s advanced oxidation system effectively destroys chlorine resistant contaminants while enabling residential pools to reduce chlorine by 80 percent to chlorine free. Clear Comfort enables commercial pools to reduce chlorine use by as much as 70 percent and reduce harmful disinfection byproducts by as much as 90 percent.
