[Video] Pool Story: Improving a YMCA’s Pool Air & Water Quality

The YMCA of Boulder Valley didn’t just want another quick-fix solution, but rather a solution they could count on for better water quality for good.

The Challenge

To keep up with the bather load from swimming lessons, competitions and other activities, aquatic facility operators need a way to maintain clear, clean and healthy water without overusing chlorine and increasing harmful combined chlorine levels.

Combined chlorine, also known as chloramines, in the air and water can be harmful to swimmers and staff, causing unpleasant pool odor, eye and lung irritation among other health problems. Combined chlorine is created when chlorine reacts to organic material that swimmers and staff bring into the water like sweat, lotions, urea, etc.

The Solution

In search of a healthy and efficient pool treatment solution, the YMCA of Boulder Valley in Colorado implemented Clear Comfort’s hydroxyl-based Advanced Oxidation (AOP) pool systems and monitored their performance and patrons’ feedback.

Clear Comfort’s AOP uses a similar process to the way the atmosphere cleans our air. The process generates powerful hydroxyl radicals that destroy organic materials, bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts, including chlorine-resistant parasite Cryptosporidium parvum.

In addition, hydroxyls help reduce the irritating and harmful health effects of combined chlorine that are created in mismanaged chlorine sanitation. For safe and code-required pool treatment, Clear Comfort’s commercial pool systems work alongside chlorine to provide complete water disinfection.

The Results

After years of using Clear Comfort’s hydroxyl-based AOP, the YMCA of Boulder Valley achieved better long-term water quality with less combined chlorine levels and chemical use and costs.

“We’ve gotten a lot of feedback for the water quality from our members,” said Jonathan WebsterExecutive Director of Facilities at YMCA of Boulder Valley. “Comparing pool to pool, this pool just feels softer it’s nicer it smells better we don’t have a problem with chloramines.”

In addition, the facility reduced toxic chemical handling, storage and distribution in our ecosystem, making the transition to Clear Comfort AOP a healthy, cost-effective and sustainable win.
