pool chemicalsLast week, I blogged about pool chemical related incidents that have happened this summer. This week I want to share some storage and handling tips for pool chemicals. Tip no. 1 is to use an advanced oxidation system that reduces or eliminates the need for chlorine, but if you still need to use pool chemicals, you should do so with care. Common chemicals and other pool water treatment additives include:
  • Chlorine
  • Bromine
  • Algaecides
  • Clarifiers
  • Enzymes
Pool chemicals are meant to be dissolved in large quantities of water, so improper mixing or mishandling can have serious consequences. Proper storage of pool chemicals can help prevent spilling them on the pool deck, contaminating soil or burning your skin. Storage Tips:
  • All chemicals should be stored out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not store near flammable materials
  • Tightly close lids
  • Store in cool, dry and well-ventilated area
  • Do not store containers on top of each other
  • Read the labels and follow instructions carefully
  • Never mix chemicals together — this could cause an explosion
  • Wear protective eyewear and gloves, long sleeves, pants and closed-toe shoes when handling pool chemicals
  • If you need to mix water and chemicals add the chemicals to the water instead of adding water to the chemicals as the mixture might splash onto your skin
  • Do not add chemicals to the pool water while swimmers are in the water
  • Chemical containers should not be used for any purpose other than storing the original product
  • Do not smoke when handling pool chemicals
If pool chemicals are swallowed, check the label for instructions on what to do. Call the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) or go to the Emergency Room for treatment and be sure to take the chemical container with you so the medical personnel know what has been ingested. Always take it seriously when working with pool chemicals. And if you want to reduce or eliminate your chemical handling and exposure to pool chemicals, invest in a Clear Comfort system.
