National Volunteer Month: Swimming organizations with worthy causesDid you know that more than 60 million Americans volunteer every year? If you’re not one of these volunteers yet, National Volunteer Month this April is a perfect opportunity to start giving back.

Swimming competitions, programs and charities all strongly rely on volunteers. Even Team USA’s swim meets couldn’t happen without the volunteers that time, judge, fundraise and coach. In addition, volunteering your time to help others, especially for a cause that’s meaningful to you, has been proven to improve mental and physical health.

If you don’t know where to begin, we’ve listed some swimming and swimming-related organizations to help get your feet wet and support worthy causes.

Local volunteering opportunities:

  • Your local club swim team:
    • The USA-Swimming’s Find a Team search engine is a great way to locate swim teams that help with fundraising, check in desks, timing and other tasks that are essential to the success of swim meets.
  • Your local U.S. Masters Swim team:
    • USMS is a non-profit organization for adults seeking to train and compete in swimming.
  • Your local college or university:
    • You can contact your alma mater or a local university to offer your assistance with swim meets and other events. Most swim team coach contact information can be found on the university’s athletic department website.
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of America:
    • These programs help young people make positive improvements to their health and well-being so they can achieve their personal goals and become self-sufficient adults. This organization is always looking for volunteers and some of its programs have teamed up with the Michael Phelps Foundation to offer swimming lessons.
  • Swim for MS with the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America:
    • With this organization, you can participate in a do-it-yourself fundraiser by setting a swimming challenge and then recruiting donations to support your goal. These fundraisers can be done at any pool in any place.

National volunteering opportunities:

  • Swim Strong Foundation:
    • You can help save lives by teaching children how to swim and educate them on water safety. This group is based in New York, but there are similar programs across the U.S.
  • Michael Phelps Foundation:
    • Named after Phelp’s signature event the Individual Medley, the MPF’s im program helps prevent drowning incidents by offering children swim lessons, water-safety education and recreational water activities, as well as health and wellness courses.
  • Special Olympics:
    • The Special Olympics is a global inclusion movement that showcases the skills and dignity of athletes with intellectual disabilities. You can get involved by finding your state’s Special Olympics webpage to sign up to volunteer at a swimming event or at any of the other 30-plus sports and games events.

Don’t have extra time to volunteer? Make a donation:

  • Autism Speak:
  • Swim Across America:
    • This nonprofit organizes swimming events that raise money for finding new cures and treatments for cancer. You can make a donation to a competing swimmer, a team or to SAA’s overall cause.
  • USMS:
    • In addition to offering competitive adult swimming programs, this non-profit created the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation that raises public awareness about adult drowning and is a financial and educational resource for adult learn-to-swim programs.

In honor of National Volunteer Month set time aside to volunteer for a worthy swimming organization or any cause that’s meaningful to you. In addition, thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time to make swimming an accessible, safe and fun activity for everyone!
