How to take care of your pool while your on holidayThe holidays are almost here, which means you may be getting ready for vacation. Your pre-vacation to-do list may include turning on your security alarm, shutting the blinds or arranging a pet sitter — but don’t forget to add pool maintenance to your list.

If you’ve winterized or partially winterized your pool then you won’t have to worry about keeping your pool water clean while you’re away. But if you live in California, Florida or another warm place that let’s you keep your pool open all year, we suggest following these pre-vacation pool tips.

Check on your pool water:

Before you head out, make sure the water level is full or slightly higher than usual. Balance the pH, alkalinity and other chemicals as necessary. Adding a non-chlorine pool shock before you leave is a great way to ensure your pool will be clear and algae-free when you return.

Secure your pool safety:

You can never be too careful when it comes to pool safety. Keeping barriers around your pool is important – in case a neighbor’s kids try to swim in your unattended pool you’ll be glad you did. Pool alarms, locking the fence and a mesh safety cover can all help prevent a tragedy while you’re away. Remember to not leave a solar blanket over the pool, this will decrease skimmer effectiveness and can be a safety hazard if someone falls on top of it.

Set your pump timer:

If your pump doesn’t have a timer, invest in one. The initial investment in a timer will save you money in energy costs and time in maintenance year round. Set your pump to run eight to 12 hours each day. If you don’t have a pump timer, we recommend leaving the pump constantly running or having a pool sitter turn it on and off manually.

Have your house sitter check on the pool:

If you hire a house sitter, find someone who either has a pool of their own or has some knowledge of pool care so they’re familiar with the maintenance required. The sitter can do a brief check on the pool, i.e., emptying skimmer baskets, skimming the water surface or balancing water levels. If you don’t have a house sitter, you can contact a pool maintenance company to request vacation pool maintenance services.

Make sure your system is on:

Leaving your pool unused doesn’t mean the water can be neglected. Your pool water should be treated the same as if you were home. That means leaving your sanitation system fully operating. Depending on your sanitation system, be sure your chlorinator or salt chlorinator is full or your Clear Comfort system is turned on.

By following these pre-vacation pool tips you can enjoy a relaxing holiday vacation and come home to a clean, clear pool.
